As a child growing up in the 70s, the wedge is the one shoe I remember my fashionista mother wearing all the time. Her go to shoe. Every different variation of the wedge. One pair, in particular, was a nude patent leather with a tortoise shell heel. Hot! And she rocked them with sheer hosiery and a winter white wool dress and coat. But while I admire my mother and her wedge heels, I have also avoided too many of them for fear of once slipping them on I would be acknowledging that I have “matured” into a wedge-heel-wearing-middle-aged-woman who can no longer manage a stiletto. So just in the nick of time, the fashion fairy waves her magic wand and voila! wedge fever washes over us all with trendy, fun, hot, funky wedges — peep toes, ankle straps, platforms, suede, patent leather, in all combos of colors and materials. What’s not to love?!
And so my very own love affair with wedges began. The higher the better, and off I ran right out on a limb to snap up a pair of black suede Giuseppe Zanotti’s with an ankle strap and funky calf hair wedge with black and white leopard spots. Comfy? Not so much or at least definitely not built for long standing. Hot? Eye catching? Indeed! From there I have found myself drawn to more and more wedges and in digging in the back of the closet found a pair of old faithful Bandolino pink croc embossed strappy wedges that are my go to summer sandal with jeans, dresses, shorts you name it. That is the true beauty of a wedge, its VERSATILITY . A recent purchase of a pair of Kate Spade Black Patent Buffy wedges proved that they cross style lines effortlessly, and served as great traveling companions for my bright colored BCBG jersey dresses or a t-shirt and cropped AG Adriano Goldschmied jeans. The wedge can do whatever you ask it to do and never disappoints!
Check out my more recent scores below to now include: Jessica Simpson’s sky high Marcy suede peep toe ankle strap wedge in both black and tan – love them, so cute with cropped boyfriend jeans. Atalanta Weller Leather and Suede rimmed Mary Janes – a snappy finish to a smart, shin skimming, wool skirt. Sergio Rossi Cherry Red Suede, Peep Toe, Raffia Platform wedge – fun fun fun and a bold color for Spring and Summer, L.A.M.B. Novice Platform Wedges in a just odd enough brownish red to pass muster, and DVF Brown Wedge Sandals that are sure to be in rotation often this summer.
I haven’t climed out any further on my limb, but I have, indeed, caught the wedge fever and I don’t see it breaking anytime soon! Get yours while you can.
